Kids In Malaysia Embrace Online Learning During The MCO Period

Following the introduction of restrictions around the world due to the COVID-19 threat, people’s usual online behavior has changed, not only among adults, but also among children.

According to the latest data from Kaspersky, kids in Malaysia have paid less attention to computer games in recent months, especially when compared to the period before the pandemic began.

Statistics from the global cybersecurity company showed that majority of the children in Malaysia spent most of their time online from March, April and May on software, audio and video websites to search for files, which could be related to digital or e-learning during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Software, audio, video category includes websites for downloading certain types of files.

 Websites for downloading audio and video files: movies, recordings of sports events and concerts, music, music videos, video clips, audio and video learning materials etc
 Torrent trackers and file sharing services irrespective of physical location of files to which they provide access
 Electronic catalogues of software which has trial period of use

The MCO has kept the children to continue their education from home, done by attending online classes using the laptops, tablets, or mobile phones. Declining interest in games can be explained by the increased need of having to focus on other activities such as digital learning and online messaging related to the same cause during these periods of learning from home.

“Most parents, together with their kids, would have spent a lot of time searching for learning materials online during the MCO.

It is, however, important to remember that as we spend longer time online, the risks of cyber threats would be higher.

The MCO in Malaysia gave an unprecedented learning opportunities for the kids in the digital era, and provided a good platform for the parents to be more aware of cybersecurity, which is beyond just installing an internet security application on their devices,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Cybersecurity Malaysia reported a spike of 82.5% cybersecurity cases during MCO period, with most cases involved fraud, intrusion and cyber harassment or cyber stalking.

“One of our previous reports 5 revealed that parents fear for their children’s online safety but are not putting time to talk about it. Majority of them also agreed that they have, at least, partial responsibility for teaching their kids about internet safety.

As most moms and dads are still working from home, we advise them to spend more time with their kids discussing how to move around the web safely, and to also improve their own awareness in terms of cybersecurity threats so that they can protect their kids
better,” adds Yeo.

To ensure your child has positive digital learning during the pandemic, Kaspersky has the following recommendations:

 Spend more time to communicate with your kids about vital online safety measure. Parents’ advice must be specific, practical and timely, and delivered in a way that is useful and memorable for children.
 Surf and learn together. Seeing where your kid spends their time online means you can explore how best to keep them safe. By spending time online together playing games and so forth, you can learn from each other.
 Block and report. Teach your kid how to block and report when they see or experience
something problematic online.
 Be real with your children about how information you put online can remain there for the rest of their lives.
 Install cybersecurity software, such as Kaspersky Total Security, it can help protect against some threats, especially when you are not around to monitor in person.

XOX To Trade Actively Tomorrow; Announces RM1 Billion Financing Plan

Fantastic news for the investment industry and those seeking financing!

XOX Bhd, one of top e-wallet licence holders in Malaysia is providing up to RM1 billion in microfinancing to its 2.2 million subscribers, basically to all entrepreneurs and small business owners who require financing to either sustain or expand their business.

Its subsidiary, XOX Media Sdn Bhd has inked a partnership agreement with Wetek Technology (M) Sdn Bhd, which has committed RM1 billion in financing for this.

The directors of Wetek are Liang Zeng and Howard Leung and they have good background and financial capability to make this deal work for Malaysians.

According to the New Straits Times (NST), both the companies may issue a second tranche after the successful take-up of the initial RM1 billion.

Micro-finance is a category of financial services targeting individuals and small businesses who lack access to conventional banking and related services. The two company’s entry into this business is timely given that there are hardly any banks lending in this current crisis.

The business community must be proud and happy that XOX is doing this now to alleviate their financial burden.

The NST qouted XOX CEO Ng Kok Heng stating that the company is moving into this direction to provide entrepreneurs and small business owners access to capital and expand their business.

XOX will ride on its 2.2 million customer base for the business and the customer base is growing everyday. XOX had a year ago proposed a rights issue with free warrants to raise up to RM66 million to fund its e-wallet and electronic SIM (e-SIM) businesses expansion.

The company had allocated RM33 million of the proceeds raised from the rights issue to expand its e-wallet function by developing a new mobile application to support micropayments, the issuance of Mastercards and peer-to-peer e-money transfers.

Some RM15 million was set aside for its e-SIM expansion as an alternative to the traditional SIM cards.

In a statement, Leung Hao, who is also chairman and CEO of Brilliant (Hong Kong) Holdings Ltd said the company formed a partnership with XOX to ride on the latter’s strong subscriber base.

He said that apart from over 2.2 million subscribers, XOX has strong infrastructure in its dealership channels and technology to grow the relatively unserved market in Malaysia.

“This is a huge opportunity for Wetek to grow in this business.  Globally, the microfinance industry had serviced 139.9 million borrowers in 2018, and 65 per cent of microfinance borrowers live in rural areas where traditional banking and lending is difficult or impossible.

According to Microfinance Barometer 2019, this industry has been growing at an annual rate of 11.5 per cent over the past few years and projected to reach US$146.8 billion by 2021,” he said.

“Micro financing is a good strategy to populate eWallet with funds especially in the challenging environment of eWallet adoption nationwide. Once eWallet subscribers have money in the ewallet, they can perform transactions through XOX Digital ecology,” he added.

Wetek aims to be a market leader of micro-financing in Southeast Asia and it may rope in XOX for its expansion in the region. This RM1 billion deal will surely and definitely boost XOX’s future earnings.

The stock traded very actively today with 622 million shares exchanging hands. It went up to as high as 12.5 sen today and closed the day at 10.5 sen.

From left: Arief Imran, the founder and Group CEO of SERV Technology Sdn Bhd, Rafiza Ghazali, the Group CEO of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd and the founder of Direct Lending, Yik Seong Hui.

SERV and Direct Lending roll out financial relief for workshops under the SERV Retail-iation program, focusing on automotive aftermarket businesses. The partnership is a supply assistance program or “bantuan belian bekalan” amounting up to RM3,000 per workshop, aimed at aiding them to procure  auto part supplies.

This partnership is made in response to the recent pandemic crisis, COVID-19, that has impacted most automotive aftermarket businesses that were unable to operate at full capacity due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) enforced by the Malaysian government. These businesses are having a hard time sustaining their business given the loss of revenue with many facing cash flow and working capital difficulties.

From left: Arief Imran, the founder and Group CEO of SERV Technology Sdn Bhd, Rafiza Ghazali, the Group CEO of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd and the founder of Direct Lending, Yik Seong Hui.

Most businesses in the aftermarket services are underserved by traditional banks and have limited access to financing. With this partnership, workshops can use the relief provided to procure necessary suppliers to meet customer’s demands. Direct Lending enables fast yet simplified assessment, made possible by leveraging on track record and digital payments usage of the workshops on SERV platform.

Meanwhile on the customer side, the process will be simpler with SERV app as an intermediary between customers and workshop as the cycle of social distancing will be practised by promoting digital solutions to the aftermarket sector. Through this partnership, more and more workshops will be able to cater to the growing demands, made available to our users.

The collaboration between the two Cradle funded startups will first focus on businesses that are already registered in the recently launched SERV Retail-iation program. Interested businesses can apply for the assistance by simply filling out an online application form.

“In these unprecedented times, we are doing the best that we can to assist our merchants. With Direct Lending as our partner, relief can be provided to surface our merchants’ financial needs in order for them to sustain in business with hopes that there will be upcoming new opportunities for the local automotive industry to continue to grow and remain competitive by adapting to the post Covid situation.” comment Group CEO of SERV, Arief Imran.

”This program is designed to assist micro-entrepreneurs to not just survive this crisis, but to thrive as we enable them a simple, flexible and affordable way to buy supplies as and when required to grow their businesses”, said Yik Seong Hui, founder of Direct Lending.

“We are really proud of both SERV and Direct Lending for how much they have grown since they graduated from our CIP300 program, and seeing they are now collaborating to take part in reviving the nation’s economic sector.

“This strategic partnership between the two startups demonstrates how collaboration thrives within Malaysia’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, and also demonstrates how value propositions of two different startups can blend, creating a more complete solution for the market” comment the group CEO of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, Rafiza Ghazali.

The first batch of the program will cover up to 300 merchants, and will be available for application starting today, 15 July 2020. Both parties believe this kind of collaboration is very important to help the businesses sustaining operation, preserving jobs, hence accelerating the rejuvenation of the nation’s economic strength post-MCO.

Yayasan Peneraju, Yayasan Negeri Sembilan Bantu Asnaf Tercicir Melalui Akademik Dan TVET

Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan, Dato’ Seri Aminuddin Harun berkata, beliau mengharapkan
