IDC Report Ranks Huawei As World’s Second Largest Smartphone Vendor in Q2 2018

The secret of Huawei’s success is its consistent and massive investments into research and development.

AT Huawei, over 10% of revenue is invested in R&D every year. In 2017, its R&D investment ranked 6th among all the tech giants globally.

Consistently bringing smartphones with high-quality, best technology and best design to the market, Huawei has increasingly gained advocates and favors from global consumers.

According to recent global quarterly market monitoring reports released from IDC, SA, Canalys and Counterpoint, Huawei is now ranked second in the global smartphone market.

According to IDC’s report, Huawei shipped more than 54 million smartphones in Q2 this year, taking 15.8% of the total market share and get a 40.9% YoY increase.

The report commented that Huawei’s P20/P20 Pro series found strong demand in the $600-$800 price segment, helping Huawei build a high profile in the market. Huawei continued to earn a good reputation globally with the release of its “GPU Turbo” technology.

According to SA, Huawei’s midrange Android models, such as Nova 2S and Nova 3e, are proving wildly popular across Asia and Europe.

According to its 2017 annual report, there were about 80,000 staff members who worked for R&D, accounting for 45% of the total number of employees.

According to the 2017 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard report from the European Commission, Huawei ranked No.6 among all the tech giants in 2017 in terms of the R&D investment.

Over the years, Huawei has also built world-leading hubs of expertise, such as the algorithm center in Moscow, UX design center in San Francisco and design center in London, aesthetic center in Paris, and 5G technology development center in Germany.

LG Labs to Drive Evolution of Advanced AI Technologies Across Multiple Touchpoints

LG Electronics Inc (LG) is poised to define the future of artificial intelligence (AI) for consumers and businesses in the years ahead with the establishment of a major new AI research presence in North America in collaboration with leaders in academia and start-ups.

This week marks the launch of the new LG Electronics AI Research Lab in Canada, an extension of the newly expanded LG Silicon Valley AI Lab in Santa Clara, California.

Supporting LG’s vision of AI as a key future growth engine, the North American labs further enhance LG’s global research capabilities, which include AI labs in South Korea, India and Russia.

In addition, LG is entering into a new research partnership with the University of Toronto, which is recognized worldwide for its AI and machine learning expertise, particularly in the area of deep learning.

“Early implementations of AI in connected devices today are setting the stage for tomorrow’s smart cities, smart homes, smart businesses and smart devices, all with capabilities that no one has even dreamed of yet.” He said the North American labs and LG’s research partnership with the University of Toronto will play a key role in developing source technologies defining that future.

Under its five-year, multi-million-dollar research partnership with the University of Toronto, LG will build on its Open Platform-Open Partnership-Open Connectivity strategy to expand the AI ecosystem.

The new lab will capitalize on the expertise of researchers at the University of Toronto who will now have the opportunity to work collaboratively with LG’s growing US and Canadian AI R&D teams. Complementing this work, LG intends to collaborate with and invest in North American start-ups.

University of Toronto President Meric Gertler views LG as an exciting new partner for AI research. “The University of Toronto looks forward to partnering with an innovative global company like LG as our researchers continue to advance the boundaries of artifi-cial intelligence.

The presence of such leading, multi-national firms in our innovation ecosystem strengthens opportunities for our faculty, students and start-up companies across a whole range of disciplines.”

Echoing President Gertler’s views, Dr Park said, “AI solutions based on deep learning will revolutionize how we interact with the world around us, in new seamless ways that use contextual data from things like biometrics, emotions, gestures and of course voice.”

He went on to explain the three main pillars of LG’s AI strategy:

RHB Islamic Partners Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak To Drive Waqf Funds Initiative

RHB Islamic Bank Berhad (RHB Islamic) has partnered Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) to drive the Waqf (Islamic endowment) funds as part of MyWakaf initiative.

THE initiative is in support of Bank Negara Malaysia’s strategic programme which brings together the Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM) members on a collective basis with State Islamic Religious Councils (SIRC) to establish, collect, manage and invest in Waqf-based funds.

MyWakaf fund initiative, comprises six Islamic banking institutions collaborating to make banking services easier for contributors to channel cash endowments for the development of Waqf projects.

The main aim of this Waqf Strategic Collaboration is to promote financial inclusion by maximising the value of Waqf and to provide channels to collect and manage Waqf funds efficiently in the country.

Waqf is a voluntary, permanent, irrevocable dedication of a portion of one’s wealth, be it in cash or kind, that will be assigned to deserving causes within the community. Open to Muslims and non-Muslims, Waqf is an Islamic charitable endowment, a recurring charity where the benefits of the charitable act flows to the needy repeatedly.

Under this Partnership, RHB Islamic Bank will be the lead bank for Sarawak and will take on the roles of a collection agent and a joint manager, whereby TBS will open and maintain a collection account with RHB Islamic and manage the Waqf fund together via a Joint Management Committee (JMC).

RHB Islamic Bank will provide TBS with the necessary banking channels and services to enable effective and efficient fund collection activities.

“RHB Islamic Bank Berhad is pleased to be part of this Waqf initiative to support community development and national interests. It has always been the bank’s prerogative to nurture future generations and to contribute towards nation-building.

Adissadikin who is also the President of AIBIM, added “RHB Islamic’s role in this initiative is to promote and encourage contributions towards Waqf funds among the public and private sectors, via collection points.

These funds will then be channeled to support viable projects in education, health, economic empowerment and investment, approved by a Joint Management Committee comprising representatives from participating banks and SIRCs.”

The Waqf funds will be collected via online channels only such as JomPAY and Internet biller. JomPAY is Malaysia’s national bill payment scheme, under the auspices of Bank Negara Malaysia with the participation of banks and large billers.

Proton Merekodkan Jualan Sebanyak 8,102 Unit Pada Julai

Proton memulakan separuh kedua 2018 dengan mencatatkan angka jualan tertinggi sepanjang 30 bulan yang lalu. Jualan meningkat sebanyak 31% berbanding bulan sebelum ini dengan 8,102 unit kereta Proton dijual kepada pembeli kereta tempatan dan luar negara.

PROTON berkata, meskipun peningkatan jualan tempatan adalah disebabkan pelanggan mengambil peluang membeli kereta dengan GST yang berkadar sifar dan sebelum pelaksanaan SST pada September ini, aktiviti eksport yang diteruskan semula oleh syarikat turut menyumbang kepada peningkatan kepada keseluruhan jualan.

Anggaran pegangan pasaran adalah 11.7% kerana Saga dan Persona terus menjadi model pilihan. Pegangan pasaran PROTON meningkat sebanyak tiga bulan berturut-turut dengan anggaran 11.7% bagi Jualan Keseluruhan Industri (TIV) untuk bulan Julai.

Jumlah tersebut meningkat berbanding jumlah pegangan pasaran sebanyak 9.6% yang diperoleh pada bulan Jun mengikut angka yang dikongsi oleh Persatuan Automotif Malaysia (MAA).

Saga dan Persona kekal sebagai model pilihan apabila mencapai jualan 3,000 unit buat kali pertama pada 2018. Persona turut mencapai sasaran baharu untuk tahun ini apabila merekodkan jualan lebih daripada 2,221 unit, memecahkan rekod pertama kali iaitu sebanyak 2,000 unit sejak Mei 2017.

Saga kekal menjadi pilihan utama kerana model tersebut adalah yang paling mampu milik, luas dan dilengkapi pengendalian terbaik bagi segmennya serta dengan tawaran ‘Saga Terbaik dalam masa 10 tahun’ di mana pelanggan boleh memiliki Saga baharu ini dengan harga kurang dari RM30,000 pada bulan Jun dan Julai.

Bagi Persona, model yang mendapat penarafan antarabangsa 5 bintang oleh ASEAN NCAP ini mempunyai pelbagai ciri keselamatan termasuk Kawalan Kestabilan Elektronik (ESC), Kawalan Daya Kawalan (TC) dan 6 beg udara serta ruang dalamannya yang luas, ruangan bagasi seluas 510L dan banyak lagi, yang merupakan antara faktor utama yang mencuri perhatian pembeli.

“Justeru, kami berharap dapat mengekalkan momentum ini walaupun selepas SST diperkenalkan kerana kami bersedia untuk melancarkan SUV pertama pada tahun ini,” kata Abdul Rashid Musa, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif, PROTON Edar Sdn Bhd.

Salah satu matlamat utama yang digariskan untuk pertumbuhan jangka masa panjang PROTON ialah jualan eksport, yang telah digerakkan semula pada 2018 dengan penghantaran sebanyak 517 unit pada bulan Julai.

Pada masa ini, pasaran eksport yang paling popular untuk kereta Proton adalah di Timur Tengah menerusi lokasi utama seperti Jordan, Iraq dan Iran. Jualan di Mesir dijangka kembali pada suku akhir tahun ini apabila negara pulih dari krisis mata wang yang menghalang industri kereta mereka dalam beberapa tahun kebelakangan ini.

Meskipun usaha Proton kini tertumpu kepada pelancaran SUV yang baharu, dan untuk memastikan tarikan di dalam barisan kereta Proton sentiasa terjaga, syarikat telah memulakan dua aktiviti untuk menonjolkan produknya.

Aktiviti pertama adalah Ace The Space, di mana orang ramai dijemput untuk berkunjung ke cawangan PROTON yang terpilih untuk mengambil bahagian dalam cabaran bagi melihat berapa ramai yang boleh muat di dalam ‘Xtra ruang’ bagi sebuah Proton Ertiga.

Pasukan terbaik akan mendapat ganjaran menarik dan lima kumpulan terbaik keseluruhan dijemput untuk bersaing di pertandingan akhir yang akan diadakan pada 18 Ogos di PROTON Edar Crystal. Berlainan dari pusingan awal, kenderaan yang digunakan pada pusingan akhir adalah Proton Exora di mana akan terdapat kemungkinan besar rekod seramai 41 orang di dalam sebuah Ertiga akan dipecahkan.

Inisiatif kedua ialah PROTON 1 Tank Adventure, yang membawa para pelanggan, ahli kelab kereta Proton, selebriti dan rakan-rakan media bersama-sama menjelajah ke lima wilayah di Malaysia.

Setiap pusingan menggalakkan para peserta untuk menikmati pemandangan, budaya dan makanan tempatan di wilayah-wilayah tersebut sambil memandu kereta Proton sama ada Iriz, Persona atau Saga.

Satu-satunya cabaran dalam penjelajahan ini yang meliputi lebih dari 600km adalah mereka perlu melakukan perjalanan dengan hanya menggunakan satu tangki minyak. Hadiah akan diberikan kepada peserta yang terbaik dan pada pusingan akhir yang akan diadakan pada hujung bulan ini, peserta akan diminta untuk melengkapkan perjalanan lebih dari 720km.

Angka penggunaan minyak yang paling jimat yang diperoleh para peserta semasa pusingan wilayah setakat ini adalah 21.05km/L bagi Iriz dan 25.18km/L bagi Persona. Bagi Proton Saga pula, bacaan terbaik yang direkodkan adalah 28.49km/L.

Seperti bulan-bulan sebelum ini, PROTON terus menyokong Tabung Harapan Malaysia dengan menyumbang sebanyak RM10 untuk setiap kereta yang dijual sehingga 31 Disember 2018. Oleh itu, dengan penjualan sebanyak 8,102 unit kereta pada Julai, sejumlah RM81,020 akan diperuntukkan tambahan dari sumbangan sebanyak RM61,730 pada bulan Jun.

Dengan kawasan seluas 2418 meter persegi, cawangan ini dilengkapi dengan 14 petak servis, 10 ruangan ketuk dan cat serta ruangan yang memuatkan sehingga 10 kenderaan di ruang pameran.

Pelanggan turut selesa dengan ruangan tempat duduk yang luas, di mana boleh memuatkan 80 tempat duduk untuk mereka.
