BAE Systems Announces Evolution In Unmanned Boat Technology

BAE Systems has successfully completed a series of trials on a ‘first of its kind’ autonomous boat that will allow navies to go beyond the limits of human endurance with unmanned vessels that can travel further, for longer and to more inhospitable environments.

THE autonomous Pacific 950 Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) demonstrator has been used to develop and prove innovative technologies which have the potential to make naval missions faster, easier and safer, taking the relationship between human and machine to new territories.

Developed alongside industry experts from L3Harris and MSI Defence Systems, the P950 is equipped with automated navigational decision-making technologies, freeing up operators to focus on mission critical information from afar.

To enhance the capability of existing warships, the technology has been designed to be retrofitted to existing RIBs, such as BAE Systems’ Pacific 24, which is currently in service with the Royal Navy across its surface fleet.

The vessel can operate for up to 10 days at ‘patrol speed’ or 300 nautical miles in pursuit mode, reaching speeds of up to 45 knots, whilst either being remote controlled or on a semi-autonomous mission.

Trials conducted by BAE Systems have shown how the technology provides a unique ability to undertake complex, multi-phase missions and support advanced dynamic tasking, whilst providing enhanced situational awareness to support faster and more effective decision-making by naval operators.

It has potential applications across a range of missions, including anti-piracy operations, border control, persistent intelligence gathering, maritime security and force protection. The use of autonomous vessels in high-risk areas would allow operations to be conducted without endangering sailors.

Mike Woods, Chief Technologist for BAE Systems’ Maritime Services business, said: “This technology represents a huge step forward in the interaction between human and machine, combining sophisticated autonomous technology with human capabilities to overcome many of the challenges faced in difficult conditions at sea.

The boat keeps sailors out of harm’s way whilst allowing them to respond to the increasingly varied, often unpredictable scenarios they face every day, and aids faster decision making in complex and ambiguous situations.”

Precision delivery

The boat has pre-programmed intelligent behaviours to position itself appropriately in relation to a potential threat. Its weapons system, developed by MSI Defence Systems with BAE Systems, remains firmly under a human operator’s control, ensuring that whilst the vessel can operate and navigate autonomously, there will always be a highly-trained operator in the loop, making the final decision on engagement and targeting.

Proving the technology

First introduced on an experimental basis in 2015 and trialled as part of the Royal Navy’s Unmanned Warrior exercise in 2016, the work now completed, in collaboration with the UK Ministry of Defence, has evolved the technology on the P950 demonstrator to an advanced state of readiness.

Further work will be conducted by BAE Systems in coming months to prove the technology can be integrated with existing naval ship combat management systems. The RIB will also undertake further trials, including participation in NATO Exercise REPMUS, to be held in Portugal later this year.

Woods added: “For the past four years we have been working in collaboration to develop this ‘first of its kind’ technology. We are proud to have matured autonomous maritime technology significantly, positioning the UK as a forward thinker in this unique space and providing a crucial advantage where it counts.”

Northport – The First Malaysian Port To Be Awarded ISO 45001:2018

Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, (Northport), a member of MMC Group, recently clocked another impressive milestone in its 118-year history when it became the first Malaysian port to be awarded the ISO 45001:2018 standard.

THE Lloyd’s Register’s Assessor Manager/Country Lead for Malaysia, Mohamed Azhar Sulaiman officially handed over the ISO certificate to Northport’s CEO, Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof in a ceremony held at Northport on 27 May 2019.

“As one of Malaysia’s busiest ports, we saw the need for our workplace to be certified with ISO 45001 to proactively improve our occupational health and safety performance
in preventing injury and ill-health at the workplace.

The efforts toward the certification is also a testament of Northport’s commitment to protect our employees, customers, contractors, service providers and port users from work-related accidents,” said Azman.

Mohamed Azhar said that Northport has put in tremendous effort to operate its business and activities to the highest level of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) management systems across its organisation. Through Lloyd’s Register’s assessments, Northport employees were able to adapt and implement such a robust management system.

ISO 45001 is an ISO standard for management systems of OSH that helps organisations to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions.

It was developed by a committee of OSH experts and followed other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. It took into account other International Standards in this area such as OHSAS 18001, the International Labour Organisation’s ILO-OSH Guidelines, various national standards and the ILO’s international labour standards and conventions.

According to Azman, Northport’s journey towards ISO 45001:2018 certification began in 2012 when its Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) performance was showing a very alarming deteriorating trend.

The journey towards HSE Excellence was meticulously crafted and was divided into three phases within a period of nine years with the focus to improve HSE culture and eventually to be recognised locally and internationally.

The effort was further intensified after MMC Group took over the ownership Northport in early 2016. Under the new leadership, the initiatives in getting the certification were strengthened and immediate returns from the efforts was enjoyed with the improvement of more than 20% on Lost Time Injury (LTI) performance.

Among the HSE initiatives undertaken by the port is the Health, Safety and Environment Omission Notification (“HON”). HON is a mechanism designed to enforce safety compliance on the port users, contractors and employees within the port premises.

According to Azman, prior to HON, the port had a Non-Conformity Report (NCR) as an enforcement tool which was not as effective. When they launched HON in February 2017, Northport saw an immediate drop in the number of incidents and accidents.

UCUX or ‘You See You Act’ is another initiative introduced by the Company to promote and enhance incident reporting. UCUX is a programme in which incident alerts can be immediately done through the use of mobile phone via calls or text messages and action will be taken immediately.

To further enhance its safety measures, Northport has imposed the usage of vehicle stickers on all vehicles entering the port premises to ensure that only authorised vehicles are allowed to enter the port area.

Northport has also introduced a shuttle service arrangement for the crew of vessels intending to exit or enter the port area. A speed limit of 35 km per hour was also imposed on all motorised vehicles in the port area.

Enforcement officers equipped with speed gun devices are placed at accident-prone areas as part of its strict implementation of the regulation to curtail the risk of traffic incidences within the port footprint.

Drug and substance abuse are also taken seriously by Northport. The Company has established a policy with regards to drugs, alcohol and illegal substance to preserve the
health, safety and welfare of its employees and other port users.

To ensure thorough monitoring and to strengthen the security of the port area, Northport has enhanced its terminal surveillance with the use of a drone and closed-circuit surveillance system.

The new system utilises the latest in video surveillance technology, including facial recognition, license plate character identification, intrusion detection and night viewing.

The monitoring and controlling of the system are centralised at Northport’s new Surveillance Centre which houses high resolution intelligent large screen panels with a customisable configuration that receives its feed from 158 cameras from various locations around Northport.

This fully integrated closed-circuit surveillance system is built on smart software that is scalable and upgradeable

with features to fulfil the growing and evolving security challenges of the future.

“With its full implementation effective 1 May 2019, Northport is the first Malaysian port to use the integrated drone-closed circuit surveillance system round-the-clock to fulfil various port security needs including general surveillance, parameter monitoring and detection of suspicious activity,” said Azman.

Sime Darby Property Launches Great Minds Campaign

Collaborative effort with Yayasan Sime Darby aims to continue the conversation about mental health and break the stigma surrounding mental illness

SIME Darby Property in collaboration with Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) announced the launch of the Great Minds Campaign 2019, a mental health awareness initiative targeting children, youths and members of the public.

Sime Darby Property and YSD, together with campaign partners, the Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association (MIASA) and Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) will organise workshops and forums on mental health in schools, universities and corporate organisations benefitting more than 500 individuals.

This will be followed by an exhibition at the Great Minds Charity Ride event in Bandar Ainsdale to promote public awareness on mental health issues among 1,500 expected participants during the event.

The Great Minds Campaign aims to focus on three critical areas; raising awareness, educating society on the early identification of mental health issues and engaging stakeholders on how to care for their mental health through workshops, forums, partnership engagements and awareness programmes.

The campaign also aims to impart knowledge among students on mental health and teach younger generations how to detect signs of mental issues, ways to reach out to those in need and where to seek help.

Dato’ Wan Hashimi Albakri, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of Sime Darby Property said, “The rising concern over mental health, especially among our youths in Malaysia has triggered us to do our part in breaking the stigma surrounding mental illnesses.

As a leader in developing sustainable communities, we believe it is important that beyond homes, a healthy and thriving community can provide comfort for the mind, body and soul.”

“Sime Darby Property believes that mental health issues should not be a topic of discussion only when a tragic story hits the papers, but a national conversation now. This conversation should then lead to research, plans and actions taken to reach out and help those who are in need of help.

“At Sime Darby Property, a family’s well-being is at the forefront of every sustainable community and we want to do our part in continuing the conversation about mental health in the country and break the stigma surrounding mental illness.

“Our appreciation goes to our partners and willing sponsors for their commitment in carrying out this campaign.”

The Great Minds Campaign is a 5-month campaign which will run until November 2019. Statistics from the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2017 on mental health revealed that 29 per cent of adolescents in the country are suffering from depression and anxiety disorder compared with 12 per cent in 2011.

Dr. Hajjah Yatela Zainal Abidin, Chief Executive Officer of YSD expressed YSD’s concern that mental health issues are on the rise in Malaysia.

“Research indicates that by 2020, mental illness is expected to be the second biggest health problem affecting Malaysians after heart disease. However, unfortunately, mental health remains as one of the least addressed health challenges in the country, and a subject that is instinctively avoided to a point that it has become taboo.

“It is a topic that tends to be brushed aside and under the carpet, due to stigma as we do not understand it,” she said.

“Therefore, YSD is excited to collaborate with Sime Darby Property to spread awareness about mental health and the issues surrounding it, through workshops and forums to be held with various target groups such as school children, university students and corporate employees; whilst also encouraging improvement in mental health through a sporty lifestyle, by taking up a sporty interest such as cycling.”

“Closer to home, through the YSD Huluran Kasih programme which is an employee volunteering initiative across the 3 Sime Darby companies, we are encouraging employees to volunteer to assist during the mental health awareness workshops.

The first few mental health awareness workshops; called “Bengkel Emosi dan Harapan (EH!)” took place recently at the Sekolah Kebangsaan and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Wangsa Melawati, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Jelutong with the participation of more than 85 school children.

The workshops are a platform for children to reach out if they are affected emotionally and mentally besides raising mental health awareness.

The workshop will also involve two universities; International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Monash University Malaysia and comprise engagement programmes at two shelter homes for children in Petaling Jaya and Seremban as well as for employees within the Sime Darby corporate offices during the course of this campaign.

The apex of the campaign is the Great Minds Charity Ride that is set to take place on 12 October 2019 in Bandar Ainsdale, Negeri Sembilan, targeting the participation of around 1500 local and international riders.

Registration for the charity ride will be available at www.sports360.my by August 2019. Contact the organiser at 03-4142 1333 or [email protected]. Find out more about Mental Health and happenings by visiting https://mmha.org.my/

In a 2018 report by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the majority of payment card fraud cases in Malaysia involved credit cards, which accounted for 92.1% of total fraud losses. Payment card fraud is mainly contributed by card-not-present (CNP) fraud such as unauthorised online transactions using stolen PIN numbers, CVV code and identity theft.

“RHB is proud to be at the forefront of fraud prevention in Malaysia. In our efforts to curb fraud, we continue to pursue innovation in line with our aspirations to be a digital-centric bank by 2022. By partnering with Visa & IDEMIA, we have been able to leverage on best-in-class security features to safeguard our customers’ financial resources.

This card provides a complete end-to-end solution for RHB as an issuer and for our cardholders,” said Nazri Othman, Acting Head of Group Retail Banking, RHB Banking Group.

“In our pursuit to create superior experiences for our customers, this technologically-driven card creates a secure space for our customers when making financial transactions,” he added.

“We are focused on taking the lead to innovate and strengthen payment security in Malaysia, and believe that it is a shared responsibility amongst banks, consumers and the government to secure the commerce ecosystem. With this solution that we have built together with RHB, we can help increase online transactions, and prevent fraudulent transactions at the same time, where fraudsters attempt to use stolen card data to make purchases.

Today, we are creating innovative products and solutions for Malaysians with our valued partners, and striking a fine balance between security and innovation, which will help build confidence and trust in the payments ecosystem. This is crucial for the growth of electronic payments in the country, and Malaysia to become a more digital nation,” said Ng Kong Boon, Visa Country Manager for Malaysia.

Vincent Mouret, SVP APAC Financial Institutions from IDEMIA said, “Security and trust are the foundations of innovation at IDEMIA, and Motion Code™ technology is a result of implementing them. With zero changes required in user habit, Motion Code™ is a pioneering technology designed to prevent any online fraud and ensure seamless transactions.”

This technology relies on a complex algorithm to automatically generate a new code, and does not require any disruptive process such as installing a plugin or having to key in additional data. RHB targets to issue 21,000 new RHB Rewards Motion Code TM credit cards per year.

Cardholders stand to enjoy unlimited rewards points for cinema, overseas spending, online purchases, exclusive golf privileges, as well as health, insurance and shopping spend, among others. Customers will also receive a waiver of annual fees on the first year.

Aspen Vision City – Master Plan

The New HINO 700 Series Heavy-Duty Trucks

Jbadrila DHino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (HMSM) a subsidiary of Hino Motors, Ltd., has officially launched its new HINO 700 Series heavy-duty trucks with 16-speed Automated-Manual Transmission (AMT) technology.

THE long-awaited feature for this series was finally introduced due to the high demand from fleet customers.

The launch was an exclusive event, officiated by the Managing Director and Executive Director; Atsushi Uchiyama and Dato’ Johnny Chan. Held at EX8 Venue Subang Jaya, the
unveiling of the latest HINO 700 Series AMT models was witnessed by the invited guests; fleet customers, members of the media, authorised dealers and Hino family members.

Focused on the new variation of HINO 700 Series models; 4×2, 6×2 and 6×4 Prime Mover, guests were given the opportunity to feel the comfort of the new truck and got to preview the new HINO 700 Series AMT models up-close, and to join a networking session with the authorised dealers.

Due to land routes and ground transportation being the main distribution mechanism for most logistics companies in Malaysia, the new HINO 700 Series AMT make them ideal
delivery and heavy construction vehicles.

The Total Industry Volume (TIV) of heavy-duty Prime Mover trucks in the Malaysian market is approximately 1,200 – 1,700 units yearly, and the demand for heavy-duty trucks with automated-manual transmission is up to 50% more than manual transmission as automated-manual offers more advantages in terms of reduction of fuel consumption, improvement of driving comfort, and shifting quality.

“Hino is proud to have a long-standing number 1 position in the market in various segments, including light and medium-heavy commercial vehicles, as well as buses,” said Atsushi Uchiyama, Managing Director of HMSM.

“We are the only brand that produces a full line-up of commercial vehicles, and our flagship HINO 700 Series is now better than ever before with AMT technology, making them smarter, safer trucks for our customers.

This launch marks a milestone in the company’s history as we widen our range and challenge new business areas.”

AMT – Improving Fuel Efficiency and Driver Safety

An ultimate combination of Japanese engineering and build, the three new models are a Complete Built-Up (CBU) truck made in Japan and promises genuine Japanese parts with
QDR; Quality, Durability, and Reliability.

The new HINO new 700 Series AMT heavy-duty trucks are fitted to the 16-speed mechanical auto synchromesh ZF16 transmission with power assistance, making it easier to shift gears at higher speeds.

It also helps to reduce driver fatigue from constant gear and clutch shifting, allowing for a more comfortable drive. This allows drivers to focus on the road without shifting gears for fuel-efficient driving.

Drivers are also given the option to select a sequential manual transmission for on-demand shifting conditions.

Fitted with AMT, customers will also be able to sustain a lower operational cost through lower fuel consumption and clutch replacement cost, as the trucks manoeuvre through heavy traffic roads.

The new AMT function is designed to ensure driver comfort and ease of use with high safety elements. Likewise, the HINO 700 Series AMT is equipped with a powerful EURO 3
common-rail engine with turbo-charged intercooler and features a full-air brake system that improves braking responsiveness.

Hino products are always on the frontline and comply with the standard conditions by the Malaysia Government. Although fully developed and manufactured in Japan, Hino vehicles
can run B10 Biodiesel without any changes to components or service intervals, allowing environmentally conscious businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Unprecedented Safety and Comfort

In addition to its new AMT technology, the HINO 700 Series comes with safety compliance and comfort features such as an optimised cab space for better visibility and operability;
improved cab accessibility with the first step now connected directly to the chassis; antilock braking system (ABS) which controls the braking force of each individual wheel to prevent
the wheels from locking; high rigidity door impact beams; new large reflector headlamps to enhance night-time visibility; and front under-run prevention (FUP).

The trucks are also fitted with high-functionality and air suspension seats that provide superior seating comfort. The three-dimensional (3D) seat with a body-cradling form is able to support the driver’s back and reduce fatigue on long road trips.

All these and more make the HINO 700 Series more than a truck – they are highly reliable, dependable business partners that customers can count on.

On top of that, the new HINO 700 Series AMT also promises longer maintenance lifecycle and better fuel consumption when its drivers are properly trained and certified at the Hino
Total Support Customer Center (HTSCC).
