The oil and gas industry is known to be a tough, challenging and gruelling sector and is literally dominated by men.
BUT not many know that behind the scenes, the industry is also thriving due to the numerous contributions of several gutsy women.
Although the women are not in the oil fields or the oil platforms carrying out back breaking work, their contributions at the boardroom to chart the direction of their respective firms are equally important with the men who slug it out in the open seas under the scorching sun.
Here are some of the courageous ladies who are the unsung heroes who also play an important role in building the country’s oil and gas sector.
Petronas Human Resource Chief, Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman
Petronas Senior Vice President Group Human Resource Management, Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman is a rose among thorns.
She is the only woman on Petronas management team but that does not deter her. Her contribution towards Petronas for the past 34 years cannot be stressed enough.
Raiha Azni looks after the livelihoods of 50,000 Petronas employees all over the world and that is not a walk in the park.
At a recent gathering of women leaders in Kuala Lumpur, Raiha Azni said the oil and gas industry used to be a man’s world. Well, not anymore.
She said more and more women are being groomed to become future leaders of the national oil company.
Raiha Azni has been in Petronas Human Resource Management fraternity for 34 years, assuming her current position in 2014.
Prior to this, she served as Vice President of Group Human Resource Management Division in 2012. She has held various leadership positions in Petronas Exploration and Production Business, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, Petronas Gas Bhd and Malaysian International Trading Corporation Sdn Bhd.
Sapura Energy Berhad’s Chow Mei Mei
Chow Mei Mei was appointed as Sapura Energy Berhad’s Senior Vice President, Financial Advisory and Portfolio Planning ever since May 2012.
Prior to this, she held the position of Senior Vice President Group Strategy and Finance Division in 2015.
She had also served Sapura Energy as its Senior Vice President, Group Strategy and Business Planning Division from 2012 to 2015.
She was also Executive Director of Group Treasury and Corporate Finance at Sapura Holdings Sdn Bhd as well as Director of Treasury and Corporate Finance at SapuraCrest Petroleum.
Chow holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Business Studies, University of South Wales UK.
She is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom.
Hibiscus Petroleum’s Catherine Chow
Catherine Chow who is Hibiscus Vice President Treasury holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from the National University of Malaysia and a Masters of Business Administration degree majoring in Finance and Islamic Banking from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
Catherine brings to the company 27 years of working knowledge in the finance services sector covering both sell and buy side of the industry, of which 11 years are in corporate treasury which includes corporate risk management, cashflow management, hedging program, credit management, and capital management initiatives.
During the past 5 years, she was actively involved in cross-border financing activities for a wide range of project-based and corporate-based financing, along with credit and bank relationship management.
Sapura Energy Berhad’s Datin Paduka Kartini Haji Abdul Manaf
Datin Paduka Kartini was appointed to the board of Sapura Energy Berhad as its Non-Independent and Non-Executive Director on April 2019.
Kartini started her career with Permodalan Nasional Berhad in March 1983 and is presently Sapura’s Deputy President, Strategic Investment.
In her career of over 30 years at PNB she has served in varios capacities and has been involved in various aspects of investment management and corporate finance including mergers and acqusitions, corporate restructuring, portfolio management, property investment as well as business development.
She holds a Master of Business Admistration and Bachelor of Business Administration, both from Ohio University, United States.
Dialog Group Berhad’s Evelyn Ho
Evelyn Ho is the Chief Executive Officer of Dialog Digital Ventures, Head of Digital Technology, as well as, Acting Head of Group Corporate Communications.
She joined Dialog in 2000 as Chief Planning Officer and was previously Head of Retail Petroleum and Director of Corporate Development in January 2004 and August 2007 respectively.
She holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor Degree in Corporate Finance from University of North Texas, USA.
She has more than 26 years of working experience in the development of macro strategies and risk management.
