When the Toyota C-HR concept was first shown in 2014, its advanced design created a lot of excitement with positive responses from visitors and enthusiasts.
AS a result, the designers did their best to retain many of the styling ideas for a design that stands out in the Toyota range, and to establish a new direction amongst mid-sized crossovers.
At the time the C-HR was being developed into a production model, the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) was already available and to be utilised for all new models. With TNGA, vehicle developers have much more flexibility in the three key areas of design, powertrain and dynamics, enabling them to deliver a new and fresh take on the increasingly commoditized crossover segment.
The ‘C-HR’ name for the new model is derived from the words Compact High Rider or Cross Hatch Run-about, reflecting the role of the crossover vehicle.
The C-HR is produced in three factories for different markets around the world. The version for European and North American markets is produced in Turkey while a factory in japan produces for the model for the domestic market and some export markets.
For the ASEAN market, production is done at Toyota’s Gateway plant in Thailand. The ASEAN C-HR was unveiled at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November last year and is progressively being introduced in regional markets.
For the Malaysian market, the C-HR starts off with one variant with a 1.8-litre petrol engine. Customers have a choice of five exterior colours – White Pearl CS, Metal Stream Metallic, Blue Metallic, Red Mica and Attitude Black. Vehicles with the Blue Metallic and Red Mica finishes also come with a black roof, following the latest trend in the industry.
Like other Toyota models imported and distributed by UMW Toyota Motor, the C-HR comes with a 5-year comprehensive warranty. There is no mileage limit on this warranty which is fully backed by Toyota. During the first 5 years of ownership after registration, the warranty can be transferred to the next owner of the vehicle if it is sold off. Full aftersales support, including replacement parts, will be available through the network of authorised Toyota service centres nationwide.
POWERTRAIN
Taking into consideration the requirements and conditions in the ASEAN region, the C-HR engineers chose the Toyota 2ZR-FBE petrol engine which is from the ZR engine family that is used in a wide range of Toyota models. As with virtually all modern Toyota engines, the 1.8-litre 4-cylinder powerplant has dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with 4 valves per cylinder and Dual VVT-I (computer managed, continuously variable valve timing at the intake and exhaust ports).
The engine produces maximum power of 140 ps at 6,400 rpm with maximum torque of 171 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Optimized driving performance with high fuel efficiency can be achieved with RON95 petrol.
The CVT automatic transmission incorporates Sequential Shiftmatic with 7 speeds, which allows the driver to manually select gears when desired. Shifting is done in a sequential manner with a push or pull on the shift lever. The 7 ratios chosen for the C-HR transmission provide optimal balance between performance and fuel efficiency, with smooth and responsive gear changes.
Three Driving Modes are available – ECO, NORMAL and SPORT. Depending on the mode chosen, the on-board computer will optimize fuel-saving or sharpen throttle response. In the case of the ECO mode, it will adjust the performance of the air-conditioning system and throttle response to prioritize fuel efficiency. NORMAL mode would be suitable for everyday use as it gives the best balance of fuel efficiency and performance for an enjoyable drive, while SPORT mode sharpens the engine response for a more exhilarating drive.
PLATFORM & STRUCTURE
The C-HR sits on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), a new platform which will be used for many new models. Aiming to structurally transform automobile design, TNGA dramatically improves the basic performance and marketability of Toyota vehicles by reforming and considering the overall optimization of developing new powertrain components and vehicle platforms. The C-HR is the second model after the latest Prius to use TNGA.
The C-HR’s use of a TNGA-based platform has proved central in supporting Chief Engineer Koba’s determination not to compromise design or driving performance, contributing to the model’s fun-to-drive quality.
In terms of vehicle dynamics, the basic design of the platform allows for a low centre of gravity to be achieved; in the case of the C-HR, the lowest in its class. The benefit of this is realized in a more engaging drive and balanced handling, with much reduced body roll. But while the centre of gravity lowers the vehicle, the designers have raised the driver’s hip point slightly to provide the higher, commanding position that customers of such vehicles appreciate. At the same time, the low roofline does not cause a compromise in headroom for front or rear passengers, thanks to the lower seating positions made possible by the new platform.
Using TNGA allows for a new approach to the engine compartment layout, with components relocated and set lower down in the space to support the vehicle’s lower centre of gravity. In the C-HR, it has enabled the engine to be angled slightly rearward, enabling the designers to lower the bonnet line.
The platform combines with the C-HR’s highly rigid body to provide excellent responsiveness that is consistent and linear to the driver’s inputs. The essential quality of the dynamic handling removes the need for the suspension to be firmed up to achieve the desired level of performance, thus avoiding any compromise in ride comfort.
The MacPherson strut suspension at the front was designed specifically for the C-HR. It includes a strut bearing rotation axis that has been defined to reduce steering friction drastically, allowing smooth and accurate steering. To enhance rigidity, the large-diameter stabilizer is directly linked to the strut via a stabilizer link.
At the rear, a double wishbone suspension contributes significantly to the driving experience. Mounted off a sub-frame, the suspension angles have been optimized for sharper handling in spite of the height of the vehicle. The shock absorbers are angled forward, reducing road load and improving luggage space.
The C-HR comes with 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, featuring a dynamic 5-spoke design. The tyres fitted are sized 215/60R17 and have been specially chosen for a good balance between ride comfort, low noise and good grip over different surfaces.
SAFETY
Toyota is striving towards the realization of the ultimate goal of a mobile society – zero casualties from traffic accidents. There are different approaches being taken and the superior safety performance inherent in TNGA is among them. With priority given to achieving the highest standards of active and passive safety, TNGA helps meet the toughest standards set by the world’s leading independent crash test programs, supported by the advanced performance of the functions and safety systems in the C-HR.
The strong bodywork is the first defence in collisions and it has been engineered to absorb as well as dissipate impact forces before they reach the cabin, minimising serious injuries. Seven SRS airbags around the front and sides of the cabin (including one for the driver’s knees) provide restraint and cushioning, with the curtain airbags closing off the window openings and reducing the dangers of occupants being ejected in extreme situations.
Like other Toyota models today, the C-HR has ABS as standard with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) to help the driver retain or regain control should the vehicle skid or start to spin. Managed by a computer using real-time data from sensors, these systems can help prevent accidents that can lead to injuries or costly repairs.
Even in everyday driving condition, there are systems in the C-HR that improve safety. For example, besides the front and rear parking sensors, there is also Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) that complements the Reverse Camera view.
While the parking sensors cover the area directly behind the vehicle, detecting humans or hazards, RCTA has wider coverage to either side of the rear of the vehicle. This is particularly useful when reversing out of a parking bay as approaching traffic from either side can be detected earlier, and the driver alerted to stop or proceed cautiously.
To reduce collisions with other vehicles when changing lanes, there’s the Blind Spot Monitoring system (BSM) which activates whenever the turn signal is in operation. The system monitors the areas along both sides of the vehicle (the blind spots) up to 60 metres behind. If there is a vehicle which the driver might not have noticed, a light will flash in the left or right door mirror, thus alerting the driver and avoiding an accident.
The C-HR is also equipped with an Electric Parking Brake which has much easier operation than the traditional mechanical cable-operated handbrake. Minimal effort is needed to activate the brake using a small tab on the centre console between the seats.
Additionally, the brake system has Auto Brake Hold which can be activated when the driver requires it. With Auto Brake Hold, the vehicle can be in DRIVE (gear engaged) but the driver need not press on the brake pedal. The creeping motion that occurs in such situations will be prevented by the system which deactivates when the accelerator pedal is pressed to move forward.
Although automatic transmissions reduce the tendency for a vehicle to roll backwards on a slope, it can still happen on very steep slopes. To reduce the stress and danger, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) will prevent the C-HR from rolling backwards. HAC operates by controlling brake fluid pressure as the driver’s foot is removed from the brake to the accelerator on steep slopes.
Although today’s tyres are stronger and punctures are less likely, loss of air pressure can still occur for various reasons. Should a tyre’s pressure become too low, grip and handling will be affected and can be dangerous during driving.
It is recommended that driver’s check the pressures regularly to detect leaks early but for those who may not do this, the C-HR has a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that will alert them when the pressure of any tyre is too low. A warning light will illuminate on the instrument panel if the pressure in any tyre gas decreased to approximately 80% (or less) from the original setting.
EXTERIOR
From any angle, the C-HR has a stunning look that will attract attention, whether standing still or on the move. The design concept features a diamond architectural theme with wheel arches projecting prominently at all four corners to emphasise strength and rigidity
At the front, the slender upper grille flows from the Toyota badge into the sleek, aggressive wing extremities of the headlamp clusters and wraps fully around the front corners of the vehicle. The blacked-out rocker panel towards the front and rear wheels, along with the shoulder axis that runs through to the front and rear, emphasises speed.
The C-HR’s coupe-like styling is further enhanced by disguised rear door handles integrated within the C pillar and, essential to the representation of speed within the design, the powerful projection of the sweeping roofline into a large, highly aerodynamic, skeletal frame rear spoiler.
To the rear, the strongly tapered cabin integrates a top-hinged tailgate. The distinctive rear design is highlighted by advanced LED rear combination lamps giving the floating impression on the entire lamp. Rear foglamps are also provided to increase the visibility of the vehicle to following drivers in conditions of extremely poor lighting or during very heavy rain.
The front lighting units consist of auto bi-halogen headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), supplemented by foglamps mounted on the lower bumper. The headlamps have a ‘follow-me-home’ function which keeps them on for 30 seconds after the engine is switched off. This provides illumination ahead for safety and confidence in darkened areas.
INTERIOR
Just like the exterior, the interior design of the C-HR is a departure from conventional approaches. The design concept combines high-tech functionality with fashionable style, with a seamless and expansive dashboard that is driver-focused. The seamless layered architecture of the dashboard and instrument panel flow into the door panels trim with stylish ornamentation and a piano black panel giving a high-quality appearance.
The driver-oriented area incorporates innovative details and intuitive technology. In conjunction with the asymmetrical centre console design, all controls are within easy reach of the driver while the meters and displays are also oriented towards the driver.
The sharp and clear Optitron meters flank a 4.2-inch Colour Multi-Information Display (MID) that keeps the driver informed of the vital aspect of the vehicle’s operation. The combination of bright white and blue illumination creates an advanced feel while ensuring high visibility. For enthusiast drivers, there’s also a G-monitor which shows the G-force exerted by the vehicle during cornering, acceleration and deceleration.
Toyota’s DVD-AVX infotainment system with 6 speakers comes with a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen. The system has a DVD player, Wi-Fi, an Internet browser, Voice Recognition, with connectivity to compatible smartphones using HDMI, USB, and Bluetooth. Because the touch-screen is an independent element (rather than being enclosed in the dashboard), the upper dashboard section can be considerably lower in depth, further helping driver visibility.
The cabin has a black theme with black leather upholstery for the seats giving a luxurious feel. Though the vehicle’s body is low, the seat height is positioned to make it easy to get in and out. The sporty structure of the seat gives good support to the body to reduce fatigue and also keep the body in place during cornering. The driver has power lumbar support to reduce lower back discomfort during long journeys.
Although compact in size, accommodation for the rear passengers is comfortable with sufficient headroom for taller people and good legroom for three persons. The backrest is divided into two parts (60:40 ratio) and one or both backrests can be folded down to allow long items to be carried. The available space in the boot when the rear seats are occupied is still spacious enough for a golf bag to be carried.
Standard features and equipment for the C-HR include Smart Entry & Start System which dispenses with the use of a key to lock/unlock the doors or to start/stop the engine. The rearview mirror has an electrochromic surface which darkens automatically when bright lights from behind appear, reducing glare for the driver. For a pleasant drive in any weather conditions, the fully automatic dual-zone air conditioner provides fast, effective and quiet cooling, maintaining the cabin temperature at the desire level.
To protect the C-HR from being stolen, the Toyota Security System has an immobilizer that prevents the engine from being started without the right code. Cabin and glass-breaking sensors also detect unauthorised entry and will activate a siren which has a back-up battery.
