Global apparel retailer marks its presence in the state with new store and sustainability project

UNIQLO Malaysia announced today the opening of a new store at KTCC Mall in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

In conjunction with the opening of its first store in the state, which is known for its beautiful stretch of beaches and islands where turtles come to lay eggs annually, UNIQLO is expanding its sustainability efforts to protect the east coast marine habitat through initiatives to reduce plastic pollution.

One of the major pollutants of marine habitats is plastic. To tackle the issue of plastic waste in Terengganu, which threatens the marine ecosystem, UNIQLO Malaysia is sponsoring a plastic upcycling machine for the local community.

Locals will be trained to operate the machine and supported to start a social business that
upcycles collected plastic into useful items with added value, like pots and coasters.

The machine will be kept and overseen by students of University Malaysia Terengganu as part of a youth-led project under the Faculty of Science & Marine Environment and will also be used to upcycle plastic waste from UNIQLO KTCC store.

In the future, local customers will also be invited to upcycle their plastic waste
into new items with the machine.

With the aim of connecting with local culture and establishing itself as a good neighbour, UNIQLO KTCC store staff conducted a batik t-shirt painting workshop for welfare home children in collaboration with a well-known Terengganu batik company, and donated AIRism masks to keep them comfortable and protected.

Situated on the ground floor of KTCC Mall, the new store carries a wide range of UNIQLO’s LifeWear apparel for men, women and children, including such popular UNIQLO lines as:
 AIRism: made of innovative and functional material that is breathable and moisture-wicking for optimal comfort in Malaysia’s hot and humid weather. Available in t-shirt, mask, innerwear, outerwear, hijab and more.
